What inspires my work?
I grew up on horror movies and always loved watching the making of/behind the scenes to see how they would create the effects. This is still my biggest source of inspiration.
I am, however, also inspired to create my artwork based on what I’m going through at the time. A lot of my self portrait work in particular is a reflection of my trauma & struggles. Art is therapy for me.
How do I prepare for my photoshoots?
The most laborious part of any photoshoot is the preparation, as it involves storyboarding the idea, making a shot list, scouting for the perfect location, designing and making any costumes pieces/masks and discussing ideas with the model or client.
What is my process?
Once I’ve done all of the preparation and the photoshoot is underway, I like to start with my shot list as guideline. I usually have very specific ideas in my head of what I’d like to achieve, so I make sure those shots are in the bag and then I will typically experiment or let new ideas come to me as we’re going along.
What kind of camera equipment do I use?
I use a Canon 5d mkiv & typically a 50mm or 35mm lens. I don’t feel this has a massive effect on the overall look of my work as it has more to do with environment, light and post processing but I do like the look of older film photos and feel my lens choices do affect this.
What training did I have / where did I study?
I get asked this one a lot but the boring answer is that I’m self taught.
I dropped out of school early and realised very quickly that I would need a job that required no qualifications. So I taught myself photography, built a portfolio, took some free business classes at the library and set up my own photography business.
